Frequently asked questions

About visiting Sardinia, and about this site.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia?

May, June and September are the sweet spot — warm sea, long days, and far fewer crowds than July and August. Spring is best for hiking and wildflowers; October still offers swimmable water in the south. August is peak season: beautiful, but busy and at its most expensive.

Do I need a car in Sardinia?

For most trips, yes. Public transport connects the main towns, but the beaches, villages and viewpoints that make Sardinia special are spread out. Book a hire car early for summer visits — airport availability tightens from June onwards.

Which part of Sardinia should I stay in?

It depends what you're after. Gallura and the Costa Smeralda for glamour and granite coves; Alghero and the Coral Coast for a walkable historic town base; Ogliastra for wild beaches and hiking; Cagliari for city life, food and the south's long sandy bays. Our regions pages break each one down.

Is Sardinia good for families?

Very. Shallow, sheltered beaches like Pittulongu and Cala Brandinchi are ideal for small children, distances between a beach, a town and dinner are short, and Sardinians are famously welcoming to kids. Look for our Family and Kids categories for specific recommendations.

Who writes Sardinia Blog?

A small editorial team of writers who live on the island, plus trusted contributors. The site is independent: we don't take commissions from the places we recommend, and nothing here is a paid listing.

How do I find places on the map?

Every guide, news item and event with a location is pinned on our interactive map. Open it from the main menu, zoom into the area you're visiting, and click any pin to read the full story.
