The Bastione di Saint Remy is one of Cagliari's most recognisable monuments, standing at Piazza Costituzione on the boundary between the Villanova and Castello quarters. The structure takes its name from the Baron of Saint Remy, the first Piedmontese viceroy of Sardinia.

Built between 1896 and 1902 to designs by Giuseppe Costa and Fulgenzio Setti, the complex incorporates the remains of two Spanish-era fortifications, the Sperone and Zecca bastions, which date from the second half of the sixteenth century. The broad neoclassical staircase rises from the piazza in several flights, passing through a covered promenade with painted interiors and Corinthian limestone columns before reaching the Umberto I Terrace above.

From the terrace, the views extend south to the Marina district and the harbour, east across Villanova's rooftops, and out over the Gulf of Cagliari. Entry is free and the site is open at all times. Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times to visit.

What reviewers say

Reviewers consistently highlight the panoramic views from the terrace as the main draw, with the Gulf of Cagliari and the city rooftops drawing particular praise. Many note it as an excellent spot for photography, especially in the late afternoon. The walk up the stairs requires some effort, though several visitors mention the surrounding cafés and streets make it a worthwhile stop in its own right.
