Olbia makes Skyscanner's 2027 trending list in Canada too, with searches up 117%

Olbia is eighth on Skyscanner's Canadian list of trending destinations for 2027, with return flight searches up 117% on the year before. The figure compares searches made between 1 January and 17 June 2026 with the same period of 2025, and Skyscanner says the ten places were then selected for travel suitability, so the list is not a pure ranking of search growth. Cardiff tops the Canadian edition at 1,046%, followed by St. George's in Grenada and Tivat in Montenegro. It is the second North American edition of the report to include Olbia. Skyscanner's United States list for 2027 ranks Olbia third, with searches up 143%. Olbia does not appear on the British or Australian editions. The British list does include one Italian airport, Trapani in Sicily, fourth at 95%. The Canadian ranking was picked up on 21 October by the Victoria news site Victoria Buzz, because two British Columbia towns, Penticton and Tofino, are also on it. Searches are not bookings, and a percentage rise says nothing about how many people searched in the first place. What the two lists do show is interest in northern Sardinia building in the market where Olbia's new direct flights are coming from. Delta flew New York JFK to Olbia seasonally from May 2026, and United has announced Newark to Olbia from 27 May 2027. For North American travellers this means more direct options into Olbia next summer, while Skyscanner's figures suggest more of them are already looking.

The Canadian list

Skyscanner's Canadian edition of its 2027 travel trends report names ten destinations, with the year-on-year rise in return flight searches for each: Cardiff, United Kingdom, 1,046%; St. George's, Grenada, 156%; Tivat, Montenegro, 149%; Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, 139%; Penticton, Canada, 137%; Salzburg, Austria, 119%; Bergen, Norway, 119%; Olbia, Italy, 117%; Podgorica, Montenegro, 116%; and Tofino, Canada, 83%. Skyscanner describes Olbia as the gateway to Sardinia and presents it as an island alternative to Italy's big cities.

Olbia across Skyscanner's editions

Each national edition of the report publishes its own top ten. We checked four. The United States edition ranks Olbia third, with searches up 143%, as we reported earlier. The Canadian edition ranks it eighth at 117%. The British edition does not include Olbia; its only Italian entry is Trapani, fourth at 95%. The Australian edition has no Italian destination at all. We could not retrieve the German, Dutch or Irish pages.

The two lists that include Olbia are both North American. That fits the direct flights now arriving from that side of the Atlantic. Delta flew New York JFK to Olbia seasonally from May 2026, and United has announced a Newark to Olbia service from 27 May 2027, three times a week on a Boeing 767-300ER.

A note on the numbers

These are searches, not bookings or arrivals. The percentages compare return flight searches made between 1 January and 17 June 2026 with the same period of 2025, and Skyscanner does not publish the underlying volumes, so a large rise can come from a small base; Cardiff's 1,046% is the obvious example. Skyscanner also says destinations were "selected for travel suitability" after the search data was assessed, so the order is not a pure ranking of growth. The percentages from different editions measure different markets and should not be compared as if they were one series.
