Olbia third on Skyscanner's 2027 US trending list, flight searches up 143%

Olbia ranked third on Skyscanner's trending destinations list for 2027, with flight searches up 143%, in a report the travel site published on 8 October. The figure counts roundtrip flight searches made on Skyscanner between 1 January and 17 June 2026, for travel during 2026, against the same period of 2025. Only Vero Beach in Florida (+201%) and Bimini in the Bahamas (+150%) rose faster. Olbia is the only Italian entry on the list. The ranking is narrower than it looks. Skyscanner says it handpicked ten destinations with some of the biggest year-over-year search rises, then selected them for travel suitability, so this is a curated shortlist and not a ranking of every destination it tracks. It is also specific to one market. The list runs on Skyscanner's US site and reflects American searches. The company's UK edition of the same report is a different list, led by Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan at +501%, with Trapani in Sicily the only Italian entry at +95% and no mention of Olbia. The base is small. Americans accounted for 398,607 overnight stays in Sardinia in 2025, about 1.8% of the island's 21.9 million, against 3,262,084 from Germany, so a 143% rise in searches starts from a modest share of real visitors. Searches are also intent, not bookings. For visitors this means more American competition for beds in Gallura in 2027, most of it around the Costa Smeralda season, and good reason to book peak dates early.

The full 2027 US list

Skyscanner's ten trending destinations for American travellers in 2027, by year-over-year increase in roundtrip flight searches:

  • Vero Beach, United States: +201%

  • Bimini, Bahamas: +150%

  • Olbia, Italy: +143%

  • Da Nang, Vietnam: +127%

  • Puebla, Mexico: +113%

  • Stockholm, Sweden: +99%

  • Destin, United States: +96%

  • Amarillo, United States: +93%

  • Glasgow, United Kingdom: +77%

  • Daytona Beach, United States: +65%

Five of the ten are in the United States and two more are short hops from Florida, so Olbia is the furthest-flung entry in the top three. Skyscanner's own description calls it the gateway to the Costa Smeralda and frames it as a quieter side of Italy, away from the usual crowds.

What the number is, and what it is not

The percentage is a change in search volume, not in arrivals, bookings or flights sold. Skyscanner's footnote defines it as destinations seeing an increase in roundtrip flight searches between 1 January 2026 and 17 June 2026, for travel throughout 2026, compared with the same period in 2025, then selected for travel suitability.

Three limits follow from that wording. The list is handpicked rather than exhaustive, so a destination outside the ten could have grown faster and been left out for not fitting the editorial mix. The window closed on 17 June 2026, so the rise reflects searches made in the first half of this year, not the summer just finished. And the comparison runs against 2025, when Sardinia had no scheduled nonstop flights from the United States at all.

Why American searches rose

The timing fits the air links. Delta opened a New York JFK to Olbia route on 20 May 2026, the first nonstop connection ever flown between the United States and Sardinia, four times a week to October. It was announced in September 2025 and went on sale well inside Skyscanner's measurement window. United's Newark route is a separate matter: it was announced in August 2026 for a start on 27 May 2027, after the window closed, so it cannot explain this year's search rise, although it should support the next one.

Interest was already building before either route. The Region's 2025 figures show 122,231 American arrivals and 398,607 overnight stays in Sardinia, up 30.8% and 33.3% on 2024, recorded before the first New York flights took off.

A different list for British travellers

Skyscanner publishes the report by market, and the UK edition shares only one destination with the US one. Its ten are led by Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan (+501%), Hurghada in Egypt (+186%) and Malmo in Sweden (+103%), with Trapani in Sicily fourth at +95%. Da Nang is the only overlap, at +68% for UK searches against +127% for American ones. Olbia does not appear.

That matters for how the result should be read. Olbia is trending with Americans, a market that supplied under 2% of all nights on the island in 2025. Germany, which supplied 3,262,084 nights, is not part of this ranking at all.

A note on the numbers

Skyscanner search data measures intent on one platform. It is not bookings, not arrivals, and not comparable with the Region's presenze or with the Ministry of Tourism's OTA saturation rates, which count different things. The percentages are relative changes in search volume, and a large percentage can rest on a small base. The ranking is also curated: Skyscanner states it handpicked the ten and then filtered them for travel suitability, so position three means third on this list, not third in the world. Parade, which reported the list on 8 October, gives Olbia's figure to two decimals at 142.55%; Skyscanner's own page rounds it to 143%.
